Connections and visibility

A shared memory may be ordinary to everyone else and deeply personal to the people in it.

A family photograph, a voice recording or a conversation between friends deserves a clear explanation of how it is protected.

In Clozeu, two parts of that explanation matter: access permissions and encryption.

Access permissions determine who is allowed to view or act on content. Being connected to someone does not by itself describe everything they can see. The relevant audience, Space membership and permissions also matter.

Encryption protects content by making it unreadable without the means to decrypt it.

These protections serve different purposes. Encryption does not decide whether a particular family member should see a Collection. Access rules do not, on their own, explain how stored content is protected.

Clozeu uses service-managed encryption for protected private Collection content. Authorised server workflows can decrypt that content to operate the service.

This means Clozeu should not be understood as an end-to-end encrypted service in which only the participating users hold the means to read their content.

Event material does not receive the same encryption protection as protected private Collection content. The protection described for private Collections should not be assumed to apply to material gathered in an Event.

That distinction is relevant when deciding what to keep here.

Privacy within a Family or Group Space concerns who can access material through Clozeu’s sharing rules. It does not mean the material is technically inaccessible to the service under every circumstance.

Sharing also involves people.

Someone who is permitted to view a photograph may be able to make a separate copy or capture what they see. Access controls cannot ensure that an authorised viewer will never share material elsewhere.

Changing sharing permissions later cannot recall copies that someone has already made.

Choosing an audience therefore remains an important part of protecting a memory.

Authorised service processing and inspection by personnel are different activities. Inspection of protected private content by personnel requires controlled, approved and audited access.

If you have a concern about privacy or access to shared material, contact Clozeu support.

The purpose of explaining protection is to help people make an informed choice.

For some material, Clozeu’s shared spaces may be appropriate. For material that requires a service to be unable to decrypt its contents, that requirement should guide the choice of tool.
